This is a horizontal paired bar graph that illustrates the percentage distribution by body mass index (BMI) category of males and females aged 18 or older in Canada excluding territories for 2004, 2005 and 2008.  BMI is based on measured height and weight and excludes pregnant women.

The Y axis lists the BMI categories with Underweight at the top followed by Normal weight, Overweight and Obese.

The X axis from measures the percentages and increases by increments of 10 from 0 to 50.

The left half of the graph represents the females and the right half represents males.

The percentage of females aged 18 or older who were underweight was 2.5% in 2004, 2.5% in 2005 and 2.6% in 2008.  Percentages for 2005 and 2008 should be interpreted with caution as their coefficients of variation are between 16.6% and 33.3%.

The percentage of males aged 18 or older who were underweight was 1.4% in 2004, 1.0% in 2005 and 1.4% in 2008. Percentages for 2004 and 2005 should be interpreted with caution as their coefficients of variation are between 16.6% and 33.3%.

In 2004 and 2005 the percentage of females who were underweight was significantly higher than the percentage of males at p<0.05.

The percentage of females aged 18 or older who were normal weight was 44.1% in 2004, 45.6% in 2005 and 41.7% in 2008.

The percentage of males aged 18 or older who were normal weight was 33.6% in 2004, 32.2% in 2005 and 30.4% in 2008.

In 2004, 2005 and 2008 the percentage of females who were normal weight was significantly higher than the percentage of males at p<0.05.

The percentage of females aged 18 or older who were overweight was 30.0% in 2004, 28.9% in 2005 and 31.5% in 2008.

The percentage of males aged 18 or older who were overweight was 42.0% in 2004, 41.1% in 2005 and 42.1% in 2008.

In 2004, 2005 and 2008 the percentage of females who were overweight was significantly lower than the percentage of males at p<0.05.

The percentage of females aged 18 or older who were obese was 23.2% in 2004, 23.1% in 2005 and 24.2% in 2008.

The percentage of males aged 18 or older who were obese was 23.0% in 2004, 25.7% in 2005 and 26.0% in 2008.

In 2004, 2005 and 2008 the percentage of females who were obese was not significantly different than the percentage of males at p<0.05.
